If you haven't read our last post, the Blunch family has grown by 8 paws. If you can't do the math, that means 2 PUPPIES! We are so in love with these sweet fur babies, and now it's time to spoil them! Because they're so tiny and only 10 weeks old, they still can't handle extremely hard food. We don't want them to live off of canned food and peanut butter, so we decided to try our hand at making our very own dog treats.

Homemade anything is always a treat, but dog treats are especially exciting because I am one of those freaks that looks at the ingredients in my dog's food. I don't want to eat any nasty junk if I don't have to, so why would I give junk to my precious ball of fluff? Making your own dog treats guarantees that you know exactly what you're giving your dog and not having to worry about nasty preservatives or syrups.
We investigated different recipes on Pinterest and combined that with what we found in my pantry. The result is this easy, simple dog treat recipe that contains some peanut butter. They were super fun to make, and the puppies seem to love them! (Not that I've actually seen them turn down food before...)
The recipe is a simple combination of flour, baking powder, peanut butter, and milk. I've also seen recipes use chicken stock instead of milk if you want to add a bit of meat flavor, but that sounded a little weird to me combined with peanut butter.

Combine all of your ingredients, and then roll out on a lightly-floured, hard surface. Roll out with your rolling pin until the dough is around 1/4 inches thick, and then the fun begins - cutting them out! I found this adorable cookie cutter at a small shop in Geneva, IL while visiting my family, and I have been saving it for this very purpose. It's not exactly very small, so cooking time will depend on how big your treats are. I plan to break these in half for our puppies, but I'm sure larger dogs could suffer and eat the whole thing ;)

Place your cut out treats on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees Farenheit for around 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow them to cool completely before giving them to your pup - you don't want to burn their mouths! Store in an airtight container such as a jar or this adorable copper container I found at HomeGoods. Chloe and Watson know whenever they see this jar that it's time for a treat!

Not only do you have treats to keep your loved pup satisfied and happy, but you have a way to give them treats that you can feel good about! They're healthier than a lot of treats in the stores, and odds are you have these ingredients already in your pantry so the cost is very minor! Let me know if you try this recipe out for your furry friends and how they liked them! I think they would also make a very cute gift wrapped up in a jar or cellophane bag with cute ribbon tied up. The possibilities are endless! Now, get baking!
