Teaching is a joy, but the month of May is brutal to even the Ann Shirleys of education. There are thoughts that every teacher can recognize as the end of the academic year approaches.
1. I wonder what sleep feels like.
2. I have measured out my life in stacks of grading.
3. 12-hour days are typical, right?
4. Gosh, all the other other teachers here like exhausted. Do I look that exhausted?
5. Your computer blew up, the printer went up in flames, and the gods of the internet did not accept your sacrifice? Tell me more about why your paper is not submitted.
6. The numbers until graduation strike both joy and fear into my heart.
7. Tell me one more I time, I dare you, how awesome it must be to have the summers off. I've worked every weekend since August. AUGUST!
8. This summer is going to be amazing. I'm going to grow a tea garden and write a novel (Sitcom-ish flash-forward to planning future classes in front of Netflix)!
9. Why is my self-evaluation only 3 pages long? Surely I did more than this. Why was I so busy?...
10. 10 more graded papers, and then you can drink that cup of coffee.
11. Wow. My desk looks horrible. When was the last time I dusted? Better do that now.
12 I hope my students learned something. Surely, they must have learned something.
13. This graduation has more ceremonies connected to it than did the coronation of the queen of England.
14. Look at those graduating seniors. They look so great and so happy. I can't believe they won't be here next year. I'm going to miss those kids.
15. *Crying like a baby as the students march to "Pomp and Circumstance.* I love being a teacher.
