Spotify Playlists of Note

The battle between Spotify and Pandora has escalated over the years until those who used to draw battle lines between "Coke" and "Pepsi" now have another trivial topic over which to wage war. I am a Spotify person. Spotify allows the listener to listen to specific artists and even albums, which, in my opinion, is what every music database should provide.

I searched specifically for Coldplay, not artists "like" Coldplay.

However, Spotify allows the user to become aware of new artists as well. One of the best ways in which to listen to your favorite tunes as well as become introduced with new favorites is through their playlists. Here are a few that pretty much any listener of any taste can find herself enjoying.

I. Indie Roadtrip. Indie music is not just for the hipsters. Face it; you like it. This collection of songs is designed to both soothe and entertain (hence, "road trip"), and the variety is quite lovely.

2. A Capella Groups. Some are new, some old, but most great. This is great "work" music that employs the human voice with such texture that it is nearly impossible to sing along unless you can sing three parts at once. Enjoy the inspiration of pure talent.

3. Piano Ballads. Again this is a great "background" playlist. Your favorite pieces are transformed into wordless arrangements that allow the listener to enjoy without becoming distracted.

4. How I Met Your Mother. The soundtrack for this show is really well done and draws from quite a few styles, including some classics we all know and love. Put this on for a happy, frolic-through-the-meadow mood.

5. The Vampire Diaries. I have not, nor ever will, watch this series, but this show has won awards for its soundtrack. Eclectic yet melodic, this is a fantastic mid-day playlist to throw on while cooking a spontaneous meal.

6. House, M. D. It's no surprise that a show starring a musician will have good music. The playlist includes some classics you should know, so educate your ears. Warning: it's House, M. D., so expect the songs to be a little on the broody side.

7. New Girl. Yes, another television show, but once again, the main character is also musically inclined (See the group She & Him!), and the music has some lovely retro selections that should never be forgotten.

In conclusion, thank Spotify and apparently American/Canadian television for compiling music into one place that is both easily accessible and wondrously free of charge.
