Project Patio

Spring has come to Kansas, and the itch to garden has come. However, I'm not an avid gardener. I'm also gone much of the summer traveling to see friends and family when school is out of session. I needed something that was low maintenance as well as monetarily worth the time I would spend out in the patio.
Today, I decided to begin the project. I called my local Ace Hardware and asked them if they had any pallets they wished to give away. The store gracioulsy gave me all the pallets I could carry for free, and when a worker noticed that I was having trouble getting the pallets into the back of my little Ford Focus, he threw the pallets into his pickup and drove them over to my home! Needless to say, Ace Hardware has my business.
Now that I have these pallets, I am experimenting with placement and use. I went to the glorious place that is Walmart and found a small juniper bush that is quite hearty as well as pots and soil and a few annual flowers to add texture and color to the patio.
My IKEA patio furniture, which I heartily recommend for both adorableness, perfect size, and affordability, is now surrounded by a wall of pallets that I plan on painting and adding greenery or flowers to as spring progresses.
White lights are strewn across the division wall between my patio and that of my neighbors. This patio is becoming a new favorite place to enjoy a beverage, do some grading, read a book, or entertain.
In future, I plan on adding hanging plants that adorn the division wall as well as add accents. I am currently creating a candle lantern to add another twinkle of light to the small back yard. Driving behind my house I was able to see how much of a statement the lights and pallets were able to add.
Pallets, lights, and plants can be quite affordable. Check out local businesses that may be wanting to be rid of pallets and other wood supplies. It's amazing how communities often wish to work together to beautify the place they all call home.
Above is a picture of the beginnings of the project. I like the idea that the mobility of all my decor allows me to change the patio's placement easily. Simplicity is often best.
